Symptoms include painful urination ( ‘stingy wee’, as many people call it) and stronger or bad-smelling urine, which may also be a bit cloudy, the reputed urge to pass water but only being able to do a little each time and an ache in the lower abdomen when walking or running. Back pain, fever and bed-wetting may be present, and very young children may also feel tired, irritable or have vomiting and diarrhea. The usual cause is very common bacteria called E. coil, which is present in waste matter from the back passage, finding its way up the urethra and into the bladder.
If your child is already suffering, encourage them to drink plenty of plain water- glasses and glasses of it- to dilute the sting of the urine and help flush out the bacteria.
